The Other Side of Possible – First Year Undergraduates Tackling Global Problems on a Local Level

Last semester I began working with an amazing group of first-year students who are living together in a community on my college campus. The students are all interested in a variety of disciplines in the sciences (e.g., biology, computer science, math, chemistry,  and physics). They all took a course with me last semester called, “Integrative Thinking and Writing: The Other Side of Possible.” Yes!  A Biology Professor is teaching a writing course. The ultimate goal of the course was for students to produce a 10-15 page paper on a scientific global problem, hot topic, or concern. This semester, they are designing projects that would address, on a local level, the global problems some of them wrote about last semester. We will see how it goes. My students will be blogging, on a regular basis, about their work. So, I will be blogging, too.

Here are a couple of pictures of our community!
